The New Lexicon I.

Philosophy of Music Management and Leadership [research group]

WORKING METHOD

The residency is organised around sustained exchange rather than one-way instruction or consultancy. Participants bring practices and projects situated within particular organisations, communities, economies, histories, and responsibilities. The group’s task is to establish conditions under which those projects can be examined with rigour, generosity, and conceptual precision.

Presentation and discussion may draw on organisational cases, programme plans, policies, governance documents, budgets, contracts, timelines, audience research, evaluation frameworks, diagrams, essays, or hybrid formats. No single form is privileged as the default evidence of management or leadership. Materials are considered in relation to the questions they raise, the decisions they organise, and the understanding they make possible. Sensitive information may be anonymised; participation does not require disclosure of confidential material.

Participants may work from current responsibilities, completed cases, or speculative models, provided that the material supports concrete examination of choices, constraints, and consequences. The residency values situated knowledge while asking how insights from one context might travel without being treated as universally transferable.

Participants will define terms, identify assumptions informing decisions, clarify relations between stated values and operating procedures, and distinguish goals from the means used to pursue them. Discussion will attend not only to intended outcomes, but also to how premises are embodied in governance, resource allocation, labour relations, schedules, communication, partnerships, measures of success, and conditions of participation.

Critical engagement is constructive. Feedback should neither simply affirm a project nor measure it against a universal model of effectiveness. It should reveal consequences, identify tensions between claims and structures, locate unexamined assumptions, and open viable paths for development. Participants are expected to respond to others with the seriousness they expect for their own work.

The inquiry is intentionally plural. It seeks neither managerial consensus nor adherence to a particular leadership school. Productive disagreement, methodological difference, and conceptual tension are conditions of collective research. The programme supports a discourse in which incompatible positions can be stated clearly, examined fairly, and transformed through encounter.
