TOWARDS MULTIPLE PHILOSOPHIES OF MUSIC EVOLUTION
The New Lexicon seeks neither to codify one authoritative philosophy of music management and leadership nor to determine in advance what responsible leadership must look like. A field concerned with organising musical life must remain responsive to practices differing in scale, purpose, history, funding, aesthetic orientation, cultural context, and public obligation. Its concepts must be precise without claiming universality, open to revision without losing critical force, and capable of addressing both singular decisions and the systems that make them possible.
The programme aims to establish conditions under which multiple philosophies may emerge: philosophies generated through practice, sharpened through critique, tested through dialogue, and revised through encounter. They may disagree about institutional purpose, the location of authority, the meaning of sustainability, the relation between artistic freedom and public responsibility, or the criteria of organisational success. Their value need not lie in convergence, but in their capacity to clarify what is at stake and renew the languages through which musical life is organised.
To develop a new lexicon is to make new distinctions possible and become more accountable for those already in use. It is to ask what our concepts allow practitioners and institutions to notice, what they prevent them from noticing, whose interests they naturalise, and how management and leadership might transform the terms of their own intelligibility. The residency begins from this task and invites music managers and leaders to undertake it collectively.
